How to Hook the Big Fish!

By Bill Watkins Fly Fishing is a passion of mine and I enjoy sharing my tips so that others can learn to catch the Big Fish! I usually go out from the Boca inlet in Boca Raton, Florida. Then I drift for hours luring the fish. As much as I enjoy catching the fish I truly enjoy the peace and quiet of the ocean. It certainly does clear the mind from the hustle and bustle of life. When the species of fish I am searching for aren't hungry for the flys that I present them then I use conventional tackle.
That may consist of either live or dead bait. Then I go out to the desired depth to where the species of fish congregate. Usually starting with a depth of about 110 feet of water and drifting out to over 200 feet. I use three light tackle rods with 15 lb test on each one. That gives the fish less chance of seeing the line. I fish each rod at a different depth in the water column. The first rod I fish live bait or dead ballyhoo with a short piece of leader wire. Let the line out until the bait is at least 75 yards from the boat. The second rod I add a small egg sinker, enough to get the line down about 20 to 30 feet. I let this line out about 50 yards. I use live pilchard, live goggle-eye or sardines that are either live or dead. The third rod I fish on the bottom depending on how much current there is I use either 4, 6, or 8 oz sinker. Whatever it takes for me to get to the bottom. Using no leader I thread the egg sinker through the line and tie my pre-made rig to the hook. Then I hook a dead sardine or 1/2 a ballyhoo through the mouth with a circle hook and hook the treble hook on the rear part of the bait. Then drop the bait to the bottom and slowly move it up and down off the bottom and that is when I get most of my strikes. When using light tackle on the bottom it is very important to have the rod tip next to the water and the line tight so when you setup to hook the fish you can bring the fish up off the bottom quicker. Otherwise the fish will go into a rock hole and break you off. I have learned many techniques over the years and one of the most important things is what is the most effective rig.
These rigs are most effective for catching any fish but especially those that live on the bottom, especially Grouper and Snapper. If you look at the first photo you will see me holding two pieces of titanium wire that is flexible. You can bend the wire without being concerned that it will break.
The rig is made with a 5/0 circle hook and titanium wire attached to a treble hook. I catch 90% of my fish on the treble hook. The length of the wire is determined by the bait that you are attaching it to. Shorter wire for shorter baits and of course longer wire for longer baits. The photos show roughly how far to place the treble hook from the tail of the bait.
After you cut the wire to length to install the hooks you must use a barrel sleeve and crimp it onto the wire to secure the hooks. Once I have my catch of the day I then prepare dinner. If these words or ones like them sound all too familiar, you might be experiencing "checkbook battles" in your relationship. Checkbook battles are simply fights about money. In marriage, the Big Six areas of potential conflict are communication, sex, children, in-laws, religion and, you guessed it, money. For many couples, money can become a vicious battleground. In my work helping couples deal with this issue, I've found that people are often uncomfortable talking about money. Almost any other issue, including sex, seems to be discussed more easily. Many couples have never discussed it all, except to argue about it. It's not surprising that research shows many divorces can be traced back to conflicts over money. So why all the conflict over money? Maybe it's because people tend to regard money in very different ways. A useful definition of money is simply that it is "green energy." The way that we handle this green energy is our "money style." Our money style is determined by at least two factors: the emotional meaning that we give to money and the way money was handled in the family in which we grew up. Consider what the emotional meaning of money is for you. Does it represent security, power, pleasure, control, independence? Or perhaps something else? By Dennis Diehl Fundamentalist Christian leaders love a good Middle East war as long as it doesn't affect them personally. Every time sabres rattle and armies move around to torment the common folk, who simply want to be left alone, they become almost giddy over the imminent return of Jesus. "Boy, you can sure tell it's almost time for Jesus to return," they will drool. Of course, this sham has been going on for 2000 years now and "Behold I come quickly," as noted in the Book of Revelation, has dragged on and on with only rotting bodies to show for it. Now we live in a time where it even feels like the leaders in government seem to feel that if they just push and pull the right way, they can orchestrate the Second Coming. We should have paid more attention to what the next eight years would be like when the President announced the axis of evil. John Hagee, the rotund and mouthy fundamentalist TV Evangelist, who has turned alleged Bible prophecies of just what exactly, for sure, you betcha believe it, will happen, into influence peddling, is busily running around encouraging war with Iran to fit his plan for our salvation. "Hagee has spent the past six months mobilizing popular support for a war with Iran. Based on his end-times prophecy and false claims that Iran is just months away from a viable nuclear weapon, Hagee maintains that confrontation with Iran is necessary to fulfill God's plan for the future of the world." (Free Speech War) With charts and authoritative pronouncements, the man is just sure he knows what it will take for Jesus to say, "gosh, I better get back there. John Hagee has me scheduled and I mustn't disappoint." He is just one of many evangelicals who think they know but are going to end up with nothing but a huge sanitation problem and no Second Coming. Of course, they can always claim that it's still just around the corner and do, all the days of their lives, for big bucks and ego, until the day they die in the faith and the kids can take over the family Evangelical business that promotes the imminent return of Jesus some more. Somehow, for humans, it just feels better to think that somewhere, someone knows how it all works out and as I used to say myelf, "I have read the Book, and we win!" Everyone wants to win. Everyone wants to be protected from the wrath to come, even if the wrath that comes is man made and ill conceived. Everyone believes they belong to the right and true church with the right and true way of understanding the absolutely inerrant Bible. The problem is that the Bible, the source of their being so sure just how it all works out, is not inerrant, is often historically inaccurate and the books are often not written by those they think wrote them, nor contain the message they hope means them. All Evangelicals in times past have been the last generation and , of course, have gone to their graves perplexed as to how they could have misread the times so badly. I know pastor types who genuinely believe they personally are God's chosen Apostles, Watchers and Witnesses. They appoint themselves and go through amazing explanations as to why it's obvious to them and why it should be to you, that they are the chosen ones for you to send your tithes to. They have an amazing history of working for a church, stirring up strife, leaving that church and starting their own. They simply cannot work with or for other people. They offend and bully in the name of Jesus and people come and go in their organizations, offended, hurt and disillusioned with the lifestyles, attitudes and self-absorbed nature of God's chosen. If you put them all in the same room, however, they'd all kill each other trying to get to the top of the heap before someone took their title away from them. Most Christians who follow the charismatic leader types, and this includes in government, don't realize that narcissism, a mental disorder, propels many such people to very high positions of delusion. It has never ceased to amaze me how gullible and willing to believe anything we humans are if just the right man pushes our buttons. We know that religious types can get you killed by agreeing to drink poison, dress in nice sneakers to lay down and die or allow yourself to burn up in a raging fire. Some today are just sure it is almost time to order the faithful to flee to Petra, in Jordan, or some other safe haven, which they just know is where God is going to hide and protect the true church until God's wrath be past. Do some study on the origins of the Book of Revelation and the deficiencies of it before you "fly to her place." If this is your Church, don't go. Ideas have consequences. Faith healers, who live rather in your face with their wealth and personal arrogance, seem to intrigue us to the point of practically throwing money at them. We know they aren't really healing the deaf, the blind, the lame or the cancers that plague humans, but we let them bull shit us into thinking they do, and no one questions it. Faith healing is one of fundamentalists more cruel tricks they play on each other. I have been to those revivals to hear the healer say that time won't permit all the people in wheelchairs to be brought out and healed, but they are back stage healed and praising Jesus. I got up, went backstage and there they sat in their chairs, depressed and marginalized because there was not time to make a spectacle of them. That bastard was lying plain and simple to thousands and they threw their money at him for it. May his reward be according to his works! The problem now is that behind all bullying by America and Israel is the idea that somehow it is God's time to set the wheels in motion for the Second Coming of Jesus. What the President does or thinks, somehow is exactly what God is thining, which of course is delusional and an incredibly dangerous way to govern. By this, I mean those governments, not the average person. Most of my friends are more concerned about where this stupidity is leading than hopeful it will bring Jesus back. Most say the Jesus of Fundamentalism would be pretty darn scary. People who want you to live under their idea of Theocracy are not going to settle for not being in charge of it and YOU, in Jesus name. This President, whose family has presided over the deaths of hundreds of thousands since they came on the American scene, also has the kind of fundamentalist beliefs that wend their way into the daily decision making of our government. I'm not sure these people are really all that religious in the Sermon on the Mount sense, but it's a good show. Well, actually it's not even that. When the President said on an overseas trip that God had told him to strike Sadaam and he did, no one noticed. Imagine if Bill Clinton had said that! What a weird reality we are accepting without questioning where it is going to lead us. To question an Evangelist or Government official that feels God is telling them what to do and say is akin to questioning God Himself. Of course it isn't, but they are happy if you think that. They can do obscene things for obscene reasons and get away with it, until of course they don't any longer and we get to clean up the mess. One might be "the deceider," but we'd prefer the actual decisions be sane, helpful and encouraging. I don't, maybe it's me, but encouragement, should actually be encouraging to the encouraged. "I'm a war President," is not quite what we had in mind, especially since that seems to mean, "I provoke wars, and peoples and my friends and I make big bucks." Most of my friends have that sinking feeling that this man was not even fairly elected by the people and that voting in the future may or may not reflect the actual will of the people, but I digress. We do live in dangerous times. But it is because the ideas of people who think they know and speak for God have dangerous delusions about themselves and their direct line to who and what God is and what on earth he is thinking. Time and space would fail to remind us just how many thousands of times in the past 2000 years "God's chosen leaders" have been dead wrong..well actually they have been 100% wrong 100% of the time so far! Ideas, whether about so called Bible prophecies, the role of the Church in world affairs or of men who for the most part are really self appointed, under educated in theology and origins, scientifically ignorant or resistant to new information, have consequences. We are seeing that unfold every hour on our televisions and will contine to do so as these few make poor decisions that affect the many. If these so called leaders are not careful they will get a huge sanitation problem for all their just knowing the mind of God, and of course charge us to clean it up. Can Christian Comedy Be A Ministry? Part Two

By Fred Passmore Part Two: Why Christian Comedy is viewed with distrust by the Church. It is a historical irony that although the Church has been instrumental is promoting art as a whole to glorify God, no institution has been more resistant to new expressions of art for that purpose. Whenever an artist introduces a form of art unfamiliar to the church, it is initially viewed with distrust, as if the church suspects that the message has been made subject to the medium (in a reverse of the fears of the world). Aware that the theme of glorifying God is tantamount, the sacred critic often feels that art which expresses much of the creativity and talent of the artist is in some way detracting from the message, and indeed, may be introducing undesirable elements of the world into the church. It is the desire to separate the worldly from the sacred, without recognising that all of humanity has certain things in common, that has created this friction; a friction which has put the heat on the Christian artist striving to reach all men by all means, as did Paul (who was also criticised for it).
God Himself has used this method to communicate. Consider the events of Pentecost! The disciples had gathered at Jesus' command to await the coming of the Holy Spirit to endue them with power from on high. What was the evidence, beyond the initial visible flames of fire that descended on each of them? The ability to speak in languages other than their own native tongue. To what purpose? To edify the hearer, who would not have understood them had they been speaking the Gospel message in any other language. So God reached out to the many people from other countries, using the gift that He had given the disciples. God has given us various gifts, and we are to use them as good stewards to reach as many as we can with the message of the Gospel. We may be using, in a manner of speaking, another language than is understood by the other believers around to do this. But that in no way invalidates the message being communicated, as long as it is understood by the hearers for which it is intended. It is understood by those who need it most; by those who are spiritually receptive and open to it. Hence Jesus words; "He that hath an ear to hear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches." Christian comedy, when rightly used as a tool, is as powerful a medium as any other to communicate what the Spirit is saying to the church. Further, it is a means not only of reaching the lost with the message in a way that is palatable to them, but also of uplifting the heart of the believers already in the church. As in preaching, the message is balanced between enlightening the lost and exhorting the saved. Comedy as as legitimate a method of ministering as playing a musical instrument, singing a song, teaching a class, preaching a message, and so on. Emphasis on legitimate; it is not as common. It is also not as necessary, either. A church can do without a comedian; it cannot do without a good preacher or other ministries. However, it can benefit by a Christian comedian in the same way it can benefit by a special speaker, a talented and dedicated singer or musician, or any number of other form of the ministering arts. Consider the message of "the whole body is not the eye; if it were, where would be the hearing?" Just so, although there are parts of the body of Christ that may not be as evident or important as some others, they are still needed and beneficial. Imagine a church that promoted preaching to the total exclusion of music, singing, congregational worship or participation. Or a church that was devoted to only music and singing? Neither would be a well-rounded, effective (or well-even attended) house of worship. Look upon the Christian comedian as the funny-bone of the church! It has it's place in the body. It is worth mentioning here that skits are viewed with some distrust by those who simply doubt their usefulness. They question (rightfully so) whether skits are imparting enough of the Word to be effective, and feel that they may distract from serious preaching. This may certainly be the case if the skits are only done for fun, and contain no clear message. Skits, interpretive dance, videos, etc., when used in a church service, that are interjected only to "lighten things up" and make the church more "user-friendly" are worse than ineffective, they can be downright deadly to a worshipful atmosphere and serious consideration of eternal truths and destinies. A skit that is presented as part of a Sunday service or revival must be meaningful. This does not exclude funny skits, as long as they are both funny and meaningful. Only when written and performed with the mind to minister, (as are all of the skits on this site) and when intended to add to, affirm and confirm the preaching of a full-gospel, called-of-God minister, will they be used of God. If they are used in a setting besides Sunday church services, like special events where there is no preaching, the level of Word content is even more important, as it may be the only exposure to the Gospel that some there will have. There is NO EXCUSE for "just for fun" skits by believers. Everything should be done to the glory of God. Christian comedy, when expressed by a called and gifted Christian, can be a blessing to the saved and a means of reaching the lost. This is not to say that there are no "bad apples" in the area, any more than that of other ministries. This is to debate the legitimacy of the art, not the spirituality of individual artists. There are people living holy, and being used of God in Christian Comedy, just like there are such people in Southern Gospel singing groups. And there are a good amount of misguided, and just plain hypocritical performers in Christian Comedy, just like there are such people in Southern Gospel singing groups. I know first-hand the truth of that statement, having been heavily involved in both areas for years. I know, I'm in danger of stepping on some tender, sensitive tootsies with that statement, but that's never stopped me before. The term "sacred cow" applies to any area of ministry that is thought to be more holy than others simply due to a person's love for it. News flash, folks: people are alike all over. And God uses them in spite of it. Your type of music or ministry, whatever your preference, is no more "righteous" than any other simply because you prefer it. And neither are the performers. So, this writer hopes that if you have in the past downgraded or criticized practitioners of the Christian comedy art simply because you distrusted it, that you will --if nothing else--allow each person to answer God's call in the way he feels led without hindrance or judgement. But further, this writer hopes that you will open your heart and mind to accept the laughter and joy that can be imparted through this ministry, and not be such a sourpuss! What to Consider When Choosing a College Major

Ive compiled a list of things to consider when choosing an academic major. Level of interest: Do you enjoy the subject? You are more likely to be successful if you enjoy your major. If it bores you, you will likely be unmotivated and may suffer academically. Do you have a natural talent/skill? Dont discount any natural talents or skills, instead, let those skills guide you to success. Possible careers? What sort of job will your degree prepare you for? Will you need additional schooling to achieve your career goals? Is your major geared toward one particular trade (for example; engineering or accounting) or can you apply it to many careers (Majors such as English, history, psychology that teach marketable, non-trade specific skills such as reasoning, critical thinking, writing and communication)? What are the requirements? What courses and how many will you have to take within the major as well as supplementary courses outside your major (i.e. accounting students take courses in marketing, economics, and business as well as specific accounting courses). Does the program require a minimum GPA for admission and retention? Will you need a minor? Will you be required to complete an internship or a co-op program? Prerequisites. Are there specific courses you must complete prior to engaging in major specific courses? (Prerequisites are often lower level introductory courses that establish a basic set of knowledge that will be referred to and built upon in subsequent classes.) For example if you wanted to major in psychology you would most likely be required to take a course introducing theories, models and major researchers in the field. Evaluate the instructors. How qualified are the teachers? Where did they go to school, what sort of degrees do they hold, where have they previously worked or taught and what have they published? Find out about reputations from other students as well. Is a certain professor notorious for being rigid or difficult? A good relationship with an instructor can benefit you when you begin applying to graduate schools or jobs and you need recommendations. Program reputation. Does the program receive national attention? What do graduates think of the program? What sort of jobs do alumni hold? Are you considering a double major? A double major can be a huge undertaking. This can be fruitful but you will need to be more organized when planning class schedules and picking classes. Some majors will not allow you the time to devote to a second major (often called comprehensive majors.) Be informed and be prepared to work! Check out survey and introductory courses in a variety of programs. These courses will be more general and give you a better understanding of what to expect from the program as a whole. Remember, you probably are not going to like every single class or topic in your major. I had a friend who loved cost accounting but hated her tax accounting class. Browse the course catalog. Familiarize yourself with the policies and requirements. Read the schools handbook regarding the differences in requirements for an Associates Degree, a Bachelors of Arts, Bachelors of Science, Bachelors of Fine Arts, etc. These will each require a different set of courses. Also, check your schools general education requirements. These are often a set core of courses every student must take in order to earn their degree. Check for overlaps and conflicts with your major. Some departments wont give credit for certain courses in a major that were used for general education requirements. Use your advisor. These people know the ropes. They are there to help you navigate the system. If all of this is overwhelming (and dont feel bad if it is) relax! If you have an advisor who just isnt helping you, see if your school has a set of general advisors set up for undecided students. These counselors will often have access to information about general school topics (deadlines, procedures) as well as tools to help you find information regarding specific degree programs. If you already have a major but are unsatisfied with your advisor, consider asking for a reassignment. Often this can be done in the department office. Talk to other students. They can often provide insight and experience that will be beneficial. An upperclassman can be your best friend when it comes to figuring out the system. Not only do they know the best places to eat, but they might know the best places to buy and sell books, the best advisors and the best teachers. Dont be afraid to change your mind. In the long run its better to spend an extra year or two in college than to be miserable or regret your decisions. People change their majors all the time (I changed mine 3 times.) and while its a big decision, it is only a piece of the larger puzzle.
